Universidade Aberta (in the following: UAb), as a pioneer institution in distance higher education in PT and the main national centre of expertise, in the area, developed the know-how that allows it to be the biggest provider of on-line courses in the country. Besides its headquarters in Lisbon, the university has delegations in two major Portuguese cities: one in Porto and the other in Coimbra. Nowadays, UAb is considered to be amongst the European mega-providers of e-learning. It plays a prominent role in 1st cycle (graduation) and 2nd cycle (master´s and doctorate) teaching, in the domains of Humanities, Education Sciences, Natural Sciences, Information Technologies, Technological and Environment Sciences, Management, and Social Sciences.
Nowadays, UAb is establishing intensive collaboration on distance education with universities from the “Community of the Portuguese Speaking Countries” (CPLP) as also in Latin-American countries in the different areas of science, humanities and
technology. UAb aims at assuming the leading position as provider of distance learning courses for all the CPLP.

The FFCUL or FFC-UL (Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, FCUL) is a private non-profit organization, created in 1993 as an initiative of FCUL, to promote and facilitate scientific research, technology and development services to society, and to organize qualified human resources training and consulting expertise and knowledge dissemination. FFCUL acts as the front institution for scientific collaboration of multiple research groups. Many of R&D activities are developed with
international teams and with both international and national funding. FFCUL acts as the contractual and administrative authority on behalf of scientific research units or organizations and their investigators.
All the research and services are carried out by research units´ staff or by staff contracted by FFCUL strictly on their behalf. The largest FFCUL clients are associated to FCUL research units (which integrated researchers from more than 20 other Portuguese faculties and universities), but FFCUL can also support directly other universities and laboratories. Currently, FFCUL manages over 400 projects and implements a professional (and constantly audited) management of around 30
research centers, in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Space, Astronomy, Biology, Computer Science and Informatics, Education Sciences and Philosophy and History of Sciences.

The Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID) is a R&D institute dedicated to advanced research and development in the fields of Information Technologies, Electronics, Communications, and Energy.
INESC-ID is a non-profit institution, privately owned by IST and INESC, officially declared of public interest. It was created in 2000, as a result of a reorganization of its parent institution. Since December 2004, the institution has the status of “Laboratório
Associado” from FCT. Currently, we integrate more than one hundred PhD researchers and two hundred post-graduation students divided between nineteen research groups, organized in five main research lines:
– Computing Systems and Communication Networks
– Embedded Electronic Systems
– Information and Decision Support Systems
– Interactive Intelligent Systems
– Energy Systems
INESC-ID has participated in more than 50 research projects funded by the European Union and more than 190 funded by national entities. Until today, our researchers have published more than 700 papers in international journal papers, more than 3000 papers in international conferences, and have registered 15 patents and/or brands.

GAIPS (Intelligent Agents and Synthetic Characters Group) is a research group of INESC-ID that aims to investigate the creation of intelligent agents that act in an autonomous way in complex, dynamic environments. Website: http://gaips.inesc-id.
